Who We Are

About Us

American Atheists exists to fight for a simple idea: that you shouldn’t have to believe in god to be treated as a full and equal American.

That fight happens in courtrooms, statehouses, communities, and culture. And we show up for all of it.

Why Our Work Matters

We shine a light on the discrimination faced by atheists in our society and work to end stigma against our community.

We work with our partners on a wide range of issues that impact the lives of every American in all 50 states. We organize with grassroots advocates and community leaders in neighborhoods, cities, and states all across the country, and encourage atheists to get involved at every level of government to protect our nation from the unprecedented threat posed by Christian Nationalism.

We work with elected officials and policymakers to ensure that laws protect the fundamental right to separation of religion from government enshrined in the First Amendment and to give a voice to the millions of atheists in our nation who too often go unheard.

Why We Fight

We envision a pluralistic society where atheists and nonreligious people can participate fully without discrimination or stigma, and all people are guaranteed equality.

We work to protect civil rights, advance political equality, achieve social inclusion, and empower atheists and other nonreligious people through advocacy, education, and community building.

Our History

Since 1963, American Atheists has been the premier organization fighting for the rights of atheists and the total, absolute separation of government and religion. American Atheists was born out of a court case begun in 1959 by the Murray family which challenged mandatory prayer recitation in the public schools.

Our People

Our team of advocates, organizers, and litigators fight for the rights of atheists and others who are harmed when religious beliefs are elevated above civil rights and the law.
